Thomas P Smith asked:

The hobby of woodworking has been around for hundreds of years. The tools have changed to be increasingly efficient. But some tools have remained unchanged since they were invented. The woodworker’s plane is one of these tools. Craftsmen today are very fond of these simple planes. Woodworking basics almost always involve these basic tools. Here are a couple of tips on finding, using, and appreciating the hand plane.

First, let’s talk about what a woodworking hand plane is. A hand plane is a small tool that is used to shape, smooth, design wood. There is typically one sharp blade on a plane. This blade peels away the wood so that you can make it the appropriate shape. There are many different versions of this basic tools. They can be electric, and they can also be quite large. The most basic type of woodworking plane is the block plane. The block plane is only about the size of your hand.

With all of the more convenient options that are available, you might wonder why people still use hand planes. Many people still use hand planes because it makes them more involved with their work. A hand plane can allow you to get a more detailed design, but it can also put you in touch with your project. Most people who do woodworking are not interested in finishing their project as fast as they can. They want to take their time and work with their hands.

If you want to start woodworking and you want to get a plane, you can find them in most hardware stores. You might have to go to a woodworking specialty store if you want a large selection of planes. Woodworking takes a lot of knowledge and a lot of specific tools. If you want more information on woodworking and wood planes, make sure that you do some more research.

William Onedge asked:

There is no doubt that purchasing some basic woodworking machinery and tools and building things for your home in your spare time can save you tons of money. If you want very nice things in your home or want to put a personal touch on special furniture pieces for your family and friends, woodworking projects are the only way to go.

Rather than paying hundreds or even thousands of dollars for a nice handmade hope chest from high quality, solid wood at a store, you can now make your own chest and create all of the finest details and personal touches for your daughter!

The ability to do those things right in your own home is exciting, but there are some things to keep in mind if you want to keep the cost down as much as possible. The following tips will help you save money with woodworking projects while still getting beautiful pieces for your home.

Machinery and Tools

You can’t start woodworking until you have at least a basic collection of machinery and woodworking tools. In fact, most woodworkers start out small but find themselves easily filling a large garage or workshop with machinery and equipment needed to complete bigger and more elaborate woodworking projects. Don’t be surprised if the woodworking bug strikes your home as well!

The problem with all of the machinery and woodworking tools currently available is that there are lots of ways to waste money. You don’t want to start purchasing the most expensive brands out there with the assumption that they have to be better in some manner. There are some reasonably priced brands, which will do the job just as well, and there may be some cheap versions of some products, which work just fine for your purposes.

That said, you want to do some research before purchasing expensive machinery and woodworking tools because quality does matter. It’s better to spend a little more money on these items at first and have them last for a long time through many different projects than purchase something dirt cheap and find yourself constantly fixing or replacing it.

So, you want to do some research and find reasonably priced yet durable, high quality woodworking machinery and tools. That will save you money in the long run.

The Value of Plans

You should also have woodworking plans on hand before you start any project. These may be plans that you draw out yourself if you have the knowledge and experience to do so. Otherwise, they will be plans which you have purchased from someone else. Purchased woodworking plans are the way most beginners get started, though eventually you should have the knowledge and experience to draw up your own plans.

Plans are important because they eliminate a lot of rookie mistakes that cost a lot of money and time. When you mess up or some aspect of the project just doesn’t work as you thought it would, you have to repurchase material and redo it. Depending on the cost of the wood and how much of it is ruined, the expenses due to mistakes can add up quickly.

When you are working with a reliable plan and have the right tools on hand, you will save tons of money on your woodworking projects! You will also find the woodworking process more enjoyable and easier to handle.

Vince L. Paxton asked:

If you’re interested in woodworking then you will no doubt be confused by the huge number of different tools which are available. Many people new to woodworking will want to know which the best tools for woodworking are. There are many different types of tool available in a number of different price ranges. Some of these tools are suitable for hobbies while others are more professional.

Which brand is best?

There are a number of popular brands of woodworking tools, including Rockwell tools, Hitachi, rigid tools and sears craftsman tools. Most homeowners are well aware of the sears tools because they are easy to buy. Craftsman tools are also very popular because they are endorsed by celebrities.

The tools many professionals choose to use are Hitachi, Rockwell and Rigid tools. These are normally purchased from retailers which specialize in providing industrial tools. Some of these brands can also be brought from home improvement stores.

You can find a wide selection of discounted woodworking tools by visiting specialty woodworking shops such as Rockler Woodworking. You will be able to find a Rockler woodworking branch throughout America. These stores are also able to offer classes to help you to improve your woodworking ability. These stores are more geared up to provide woodworking tools, compared to your local home improvement store which will supply you with anything. Specialist stores are very useful as they will be able to offer specialist advice. Home improvement stores can be very helpful, however they won’t always be able to offer so much information.

Which tools do you really need?

In order to do the most simple and basic woodworking projects there are some important tools that you need. The basic set of tools includes:

-	Table saw
-	Sanders
-	Wood Glue
-	Finishing Nails
-	Hammers and/or nail gun
-	Power tools
-	Drill
-	Driver

If you want to do more extravagant woodworking projects then you will also need some extra tools such as:

-	Scroll saw
-	Miter saw
-	Router

These can create much finer detail and so make the finished piece of work look much better.

Many woodworking workshops also have a lot of cordless tools. These cordless tools are much easier to use than corded tools as you are not restricted. The batteries are rechargeable which makes them very efficient. A number of different types of battery tools are available including drills, drivers, lights, and hammers. This means that it is actually possible to construct things on site rather than having to do it all in your workshop.

You should spend time making sure that you have kitted out your workshop with all of the required tools. When you’re ready to start you will be able to find hundreds of woodworking plans on the internet. Whatever you are doing it is important that you have the right tools, it’s defiantly worth the investment!
