Woodworking – How to Select Lumber for your wood projects?

Some craftsmen buy their wood project by project. They design and lay out a piece of furniture, calculate the amount and type of wood required, then embark on a quest for exactly what they need. Other woodworkers stockpile beautiful or interesting pieces of wood even before they have a specific project in mind. Picking through the piles at the local wood dealership, surveying felled logs at a building site or scavenging bucked logs left over from roadside tree work, these craftsmen accumulate promising wood in the drying shed-a supply that serves as an inspiration for future work.

Whatever your approach, there are several sources to cover in your search for raw materials. The most obvious is the local lumberyard. Some yards stock specialty items, depending on demand in the areas they service; lumberyards along the coast, for example, might carry mahogany and teak for boat construction and repair. But because most yards primarily supply the construction trades, your solid-wood choices will probably be limited to structural softwood lumber and perhaps an occasional piece of oak. For a wider choice of hardwoods, and for wood carving and turning blanks, you will have to range farther afield. Look in the Yellow Pages for dealerships that specialize in fine hardwoods, or scan the advertisements in woodworking magazines for mail-order woodworking-supply companies.

You will pay top dollar for hardwoods bought from a retail source, but in return you will generally receive material that has been graded for quality using the standards established by the National Hardwood Lumber Association. In addition, some care has probably been taken to control the moisture content of the stock during its stay in the yard. You can also ask the retailer to furnish stock that is surfaced to a uniform thickness-a necessity for woodworkers who do not have access to a power planer.

There are other, less costly ways to obtain wood. If you live near a small sawmill, you may find good quality lumber at a very low price. However, the wood will probably be green, rough and ungraded-and it must be stickered, seasoned and surfaced before it can be used for furniture. Bigger sawmills prefer to deal with large volumes of wood and maybe reluctant to fill small orders. One answer is to pool your material needs with those of other woodworkers. Some sawmills will sell you their “planer outs”-small pieces of varying widths and thicknesses that can be bought at bargain prices.

It may also be economical for you to buy wood that has been recycled after many years of use in barns, factories, wharves and other structures. You may also find an opportunity to do your own recycling. Reusing old wood makes sense environmentally, and it is rapidly becoming the only legal way of obtaining some species. In addition, recycled boards that were cut from straight-grained old-growth timber may be superior to fresh lumber cut from smaller trees. There are drawbacks to recycling wood, however. Wear, rot and insects may add up to a waste factor of 50 percent or more. And you should expect to extract many nails, bolts and staples-and still ruin saw blades in encounters with hidden metal.

Question by sclass_benz: Is there a good woodworking lumber supplier in Western Pennsylvania?
I know there’s a bunch of stores like Groff & Groff and Hearne Hardwoods out in Eastern Pa, but there must be some in Western Pa. NOT looking for hardwood floors, but hardwood lumbers for woodworking like Walnut, Mahogany, Oak, etc.

Best answer:

Answer by John
That I can answer for you. Having lived my life in pittsburgh, pa. and jusst moved to Rhode Island last year I know where you can go if you’re familar with pittsburgh. Its Web site is hardwoodlumberagent.com

They have all kinds of wood available. Some prices are good, some are more expensive. Depends what kinds you want. It’s in West Elizabeth, I believe. They also ship but shipping is expensive.

What do you think? Answer below!

Ted Mcgrath Sr asked:

People who are making their own wood projects is on the rise. If you are one of the people who would like to try your hands on DIY custom woodworking, then you need to know a few things about it.

You will need some tools, first and foremost, as you are probably already aware. Some things to start you off, would be a hammer, a screwdriver, a measuring tape, level and a good saw, either a hand saw or a table saw, or both, depending on how much you want to spend. If you could find a second hand table saw, which works well, then that would be a good route to take.

Hopefully, you have a place where you can carry on your woodworking, without anyone bothering or interrupting you. Distractions should be kept at to a minimum, as accidents can readily take place, when you are handling sharp tools. If you have a corner in the garage or a small shed, that would be an ideal spot for you to do the woodworking. Set your equipment up and then you can start, after you choose the plan and the lumber you will need.

Good woodworking plans will keep you focused on the job to be done, then you will know which direction to take, when you are measuring and cutting. Take your time and go slowly, until you have some experience under your belt. Be patient with yourself about your work, as your desire to improve your skills, should be all the incentive you will need to keep things on an even keel.

Jeffrey Walker asked:

Beginner woodworking projects are ideal for people getting started into woodworking. These projects are basically simple projects that you should try your hand at before you can move onto more demanding ones like a barn or a shed. Simple woodworking constructions and projects can consist of anything ranging from a simple table, a chair to a chicken coop, anything that you find interesting and/or worthwhile. There are a few things that you will need to keep in mind before you can start a project so that you enjoy your experience and are not over loaded.

The equipment: There is some pretty standard woodworking equipment that you will need before you get started, which you can find in practically any hardware store in your vicinity. Before getting started into beginner woodworking projects make sure you have: lumber, nails, hinges, hammer, tape measure, framing square, ***** driver, a cross-cut or circular saw.

Getting the right plans: These can be either found on the internet or any home improvement store; either ways be sure to look for some woodworking plans from authority if you want to buy them online.

Which kind of project is right for you? This depends entirely on you. You can simply start from a table but be advised woodworking often deceives people into thinking that something can be simpler than it is. Often times people will pick up a coffee table plan thinking this couldn’t be too hard and end up with an unfinished project on their hand!

All the books I read go through the typical steps of jointing, planing and then cutting for width. If you only use a planer, what is the best way to do this and does it work well?

Thanks!
To clarify, I would be using a thickness planer, not a hand planer. Can you get by with just a thinkness planer and not a jointer? Then some folks are saying if you had to choose between the two get a jointer?

Peter I. Wilson asked:

Planning is always a good idea when it comes to home projects, especially if the project has the goal of completing a bookshelf, cabinet, small desk or other furniture item. Woodworking plans are essential for constructing a bathroom cabinet, a headboard for the bed or a shelf to organize all the books scattered about the home. If a homeowner or amateur craftsman has woodworking plans in mind, then those plans should probably be in print as well.

However, the first question to ask might be: What’s in a good plan? Many people have found that commercially available woodworking plans can eliminate the guesswork in a project and provide a solid set of guidelines for completing the wood item successfully. Such a plan should include a list of all the lumber needed by type and quantity, but should also provide a time estimate for completion of the project. The better plans will make suggestions as well, such as steering the beginner toward simpler projects, such as a birdhouse, while other plans will state that they are for someone with more experience.

A complete plan should not only be a pattern for the project, but should also include a list of the hardware and accessories needed. It is essential to know, before starting, the type and number of hinges, drawer pulls etc. required for the project. Good plans give a written description of the materials that will work best and may even suggest where to buy these items.

Some of the best woodworking plans and scroll saw projects will include a tool list, to help the craftsman complete the job with the least amount of stress and manual labor. The best plans will not assume the individual owns all the necessary tools and will be very thorough when listing the tools and equipment needed. Good plans usually include such details as the type of saw blade needed to make the proper cuts, etc.

Perhaps the key benefit of using good plans is the availability of measurements, clearly printed in black and white. For example, a particular type of bed frame plan should indicate clearly how wide individual headboard drawers, cabinets or sliding doors should be so that the overall measurements are exact. Generally, the person writing the plan, whether it is purchased or available free, has completed the project two or more times. This means that any small “bugs” and details have been worked out.

How Hard Is It To Read Plans?

This is a good question, one that is often brought up by those with less experience in woodworking. Photographs and line drawings help overcome language barriers, allowing plans to be used in various countries. The best plans illustrate the project step by step. Some of these plans don’t even need extensive written instructions, if the illustrations are complete and clear. In recent years, written directions have been provided in several of the most-used languages. The greatest benefit of good woodworking plans and patterns is this: A beginner doesn’t need to study and become an expert to make the plans work. Woodworking plans, followed carefully, can be surprisingly easy to use.

Good plans will also have a nice photo of the finished item, in addition to ideas for finishing with stain or paint. Some even suggest placement in a particular room or home location. It is quite likely that someone has created a great furniture item previously and has created a plan that will work for anyone else.
