Tawni Ambrosius asked:

Does your garage look like your kid’s room? Does your husband keep all of his stuff in one big pile, where only he can find it? Do you need work bench woodworking plans to get your garage in order and make way for a solid foundation where he can start building all of those wood projects you want.

For any wood project to be a success you need a solid platform to work on.

The bench needs to be sturdy and solid to withstand a lot of pounding, grinding and sawing.

Check out the height you want it to be. My husband is tall however we also need a section of the work bench lower for myself and my kids.

Do you want it as a permanent fixture, or make it so it can get moved?

Since you are taking the time to make a bench, figure out everything you would like and then start looking for a woodworking plan that best fits. Take a look at woodworking plans to get some new ideas and possibilities. Decide what you plan on doing on your work bench and go from there.

We decided to build ¾ the work bench to fit the height of my husband and make a small section lower for myself and the kids. It is a much safer idea than having the kids stand on a chair or stool especially with power tools or hammers in their hands. That might be something you may want to do.

Even if you have built many wood projects it is always a good idea to use woodworking plans because they take the guesswork out of it. You can finish a project in half the time and have a better finished project sometimes just by following some simple plans.

Something else to keep in mind when searching for woodworking plans for a work bench is how simple are the plans? Can you see yourself building a work bench with the plans? What good are work bench plans if you have no idea what they say. You will save yourself future headaches if you do your homework ahead of time.

Leroy C. Calstard asked:

Wood biscuits – you might not find them on your dinner table, but for a woodworker, they can be almost as important as the food. In a nutshell, wood biscuits are oval shaped discs that woodworkers insert using a special tool called a biscuit joiner. The biscuits are designed to take the place of old fashioned wooden pegs, and they are more durable and easier to use.

Using Wood Biscuits in Woodworking Projects

Sometimes, in woodworking, two pieces of wood are simply joined together using a coating of wood glue. This is fine and dandy, but in some cases, it is not enough. Wood glue won’t work if the two pieces of wood need to bend on an angle, and the wood glue won’t stand the test of time on a piece that is going to get heavy use. So while wood glue is perfect for woodworking projects that are decorative, when undertaking a functional wooded project, like the building of furniture, wood glue alone is not good enough to get the job done.

For sturdier work, you need wood biscuits. Wooden pegs were used in early woodworking to join two pieces of wood, but these could be difficult to work with. The pegs and the holes were cut at different times, meaning that they often didn’t fit quite right. Further, unless you had a lot of time on your hands to cut pegs for every project, you have to buy them pre-cut, which means you had to waste valuable time trying to cut holes to match the pegs – holes that might have to be made bigger that you had envisioned them because you could only find large pegs. Last but not least, while wood pegs were stronger than plain old wood glue, they still could give up under every day wear and tear, which is a big problem for functional woodworking projects.

Wood biscuits address this problem. First of all, they make putting the two pieces of wood together much easier. The so called biscuit joiner cuts the hole in your board exactly to match the biscuit is it is going to join, so there is no more fiddling trying to get things to match up just right. All you have to do then in push the two pieces of wood together so that the biscuit joins them both and you are all set.

The additional bonus of going with biscuits is that they are significantly stronger than both glue and pegs. If you are building furniture in particular, wood biscuits are must have woodworking tools. Your woodworking projects will be easier to build and will last longer with wood biscuits.

Douglas Taylor asked:

Most people know little about woodworking using hand tools. This may be completely new to you if you are a modern day woodworker. Some woodworkers avoid old tools at all costs. They think that they are outdated, less accurate and slower than the modern day machines. This simply is not true in most cases. This article will provide you with some facts about using planes and saws in your every day wood working projects.

Hand tools are safer. This is a major reason to consider using them. Woodworking machines with their sharp blades move pretty fast. You can have an accident and lose a finger or hand before you know what happened. You can be as careful as you can be but it only takes one small slip and you are off to the hospital or worse. Working by hand can get you hurt but the injury is normally not as severe. When you are operating the tool you usually have more reaction time to stop before it gets out of hand.

You can use a smaller work area. Table saws and planers take up a lot of room. It physically takes more space to operate your home shop with machines. Starting out by hand you can start in the corner of your garage and be just fine.

Hand tools are in some cases faster than machines. You may find that hard to believe but sometimes it is a lot faster. Sure if you are cutting out one thousand boards for a wood factory you cannot touch that by hand. However for the guy at home doing one single project by the time you set up your machine, adjust the fence and make a test cut you will be done and going on to the next step by using old fashioned tools.

It costs less to get started woodworking. Starting out with woodworking machines that are of any quality cost a lot of money. Even though you can spend plenty on high quality planes and saws the fact is you can start with a few tools and get your project done without breaking the bank.

Hand tools make less noise. This is one reason I choose to use to use these tools. There is something to be said about planning a board and hearing the blade smoothing the wood.

Achieve greater precision. Early on when using my table saw it was very easy to cut a little too much off my project. I have thrown away many a good-looking piece of wood because of some small mistake. When I use my hand saw it is much easier to sneak up on my mark and not overdo it.

I choose to use work by hand as much as I can. For myself it is a more sensible way to work with wood. The best system for most would be some sort of combination of the old and the new. Woodworking using hand tools is hard work. The rewards are worth it for me.
