If уου аѕk another whο dοеѕ word working аnd hаνе thе talent аnd thе υѕе οf thеіr hands.. thе first tool οf сhοісе іѕ οf course thе pocket knife.
In mу case, I hаνе hаd tο resort tο a Dremel.. bесаυѕе mу hands аrе nοt аblе tο grasp a pocket knife anymore. Thе Dremel allows mе tο сυt away, craft οr smooth раrtѕ οf thе wood’s surface.
One mυѕt consider whаt іt іѕ thеу аrе doing, whаt types οf wood thеу аrе going tο work wіth аnd whаt size οf lumber іѕ needed fοr thе projects. In οthеr words.. іf уου building a deck thеn a pocket knife wουld bе unsuited fοr thіѕ..
Know better? Leave уουr οwn аnѕwеr іn thе comments!

Hi Dave — If you need basic tools, that may mean you are a beginner. May I suggest some projects that are actually easier to build than woodworking projects? When working with wood, you often need to cut each piece for length, width, and depth, plus you need to cut and fit your joints. If you build projects with PVC pipe, you buy the correct diameters of pipe, and cut the pipes to proper length. Joints are all made with PVC pipe fittings. Check out the attached website for plans and ideas. Plus, there is a page just talking about the tools needed, which are mostly just basic tools. When you get a little more advanced, you may want to try some of the lathe projects. Doug
Off the top of our heads, here’s simple start-up tool kit:
- Tape measure
- Steel ruler
- Some type of square – such as a try-square or combination square
- Hand saws – if possible, one with a back, one without and a coping saw
- Drill and drill bits
- Hammer and nail-set
- Clamps – as many as possible
- Wood glue
- Rasps and files
- Wood chisels
- Bench plane and/or block plane
- A place to work – a sturdy bench with a vise is best, but fold-up sawhorses and a piece of plywood will do in a pinch.
This is assuming you won’t have access to expensive, heavy woodworking machinery. Still, you can make an endless variety of great stuff with just these few “basics”.
A woodworking book or two, and/or a little instruction to help you get started could make things much easier, if you don’t have a lot of experience.
If you are serious, and have no tools of any kind, you will want a crosscut hand saw, a hammer, and a measuring tool of some sort. With these three items you can successfully make many different things, including a homemade square to make sure that things are in proper alignment and a bench hook that will assist you in cutting material to length.
If your location, “Up here” might be some place that provides electricity, you might also later request a few power tools. However, until you become reasonably proficient in the use of hand tools you should not be trusted with power equipment.
If you really are anxious to get into woodworking, you might want to also include a hand drill and a few drill bits to accompany it.
