For the same $300, you can buy a pretty nice chess set.

I’m not a turner, but have a couple of pieces of Jet and they are good quality. The best turner I know recently became a Jet sales rep.

I had a Jet mini lathe…the model that this one replaced. I replaced it with a larger lathe. It’s a perfectly good lathe and even has an available bed extension so you can work on pieces up to 40″ long. The only thing this one doesn’t have is variable speed. Not a big deal for a chess set, but for larger items it would be useful. It’s another $80 on top of the one you’re looking at. The tools are HSS (high speed steel), which means they’re at least serviceable and will get you started. Assuming you’re making a standard size chess set, a smaller set of chisels, like these http://www.amazon.com/PSI-Woodworking-LCPM3-Turning-Chisel/dp/B000KIAE2Q/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=hi&qid=1202184997&sr=1-1
might come in handy.

By the way, check out Craigslist in your area. There are at least 7 for sale around the country right now.

Also, do not compare this lathe to anything you might purchase at Harbor Freight. I have stuff from Harbor Freight, but I have seen their lathe and it is serious junk.

I just bought a Midi-Lathe from sears on special for $200.00 free delivery.
I have dealt with Harbor freight, what they show you or tell you about is not what you’ll get, then try and contact them. They are simply a supply house and not cheap, but what they sell is cheap.

I bought a leather sewing machine from them that can hardly be used , it’s a pile of crap, I didn’t learn my lesson, I bought a set of lathe, wood, chisels, what a joke, you can get the same thing at Wal-Mart craft section for eight dollars, I paid thirty with shipping. The shipping by the way was four times the price. Stay away fro Harbor Freight.
